Li River karst peaks, countryside cycling, and sunsets that belong in an ink painting.
Yangshuo sits in the heart of the Li River karst landscape, surrounded by the same limestone peaks that have drawn Chinese painters and poets for centuries. It is small, walkable, and a world away from the megacities on the coast.
For students, Yangshuo is where the classroom disappears entirely. You cycle through rice paddies with water buffalo in the next field. You cook lunch with ingredients you bought from a village market an hour earlier. You watch the sun set behind a thousand karst peaks from the top of Xianggong Mountain. It is the quiet, physical counterpart to the technology and history of the other cities on the programme.
A four-hour drift from Guilin to Yangshuo through some of the most photographed scenery in China. Karst peaks rise directly from the water, and cormorant fishermen still work the shallows. The landscape appears on the ¥20 banknote.
Visit a local market, select seasonal produce, and cook traditional Guangxi dishes with a local chef. A hands-on lesson in food systems, local ecology, and sustainable consumption.
Flat, quiet roads through rice paddies, bamboo groves, and farming villages. No traffic, no crowds. Students ride at their own pace, stopping to explore or photograph whatever catches their eye.
A short but steep hike to a panoramic viewpoint above the Li River bend. On clear evenings, the karst peaks layer into the distance like a Chinese ink painting come to life.
April to October for warm weather and green scenery. September and October offer the golden rice harvest, the most photogenic time of year.
Yangshuo is best explored by bicycle or electric scooter. The town centre is compact and walkable. Guilin is 65km north, connected by bus or the Li River cruise itself.
Beer fish (pijiuyu) is the signature dish. Rice noodles are eaten at every meal. The night market on West Street serves everything from grilled river fish to stuffed snails.
Yangshuo features in our Nature & Landscapes programme. Explore karst peaks, river cruises, and countryside adventures.
